AWeb Tool to Checks Whether Your Email Is Rude

Sometimes, writing an email to someone you don’t know very well can be a minefield. A few misplaced words, or a slightly misjudged tone, and your message could be judged as rude.

Now a free online tool called FoxType has come to the rescue – it scans your text before you send it, and gives it a rating out of 100.

The email is categorised as either polite, impolite or neutral, and tips appear underneath the text box on what tweaks to make to improve how it sounds. The tool works by scanning the structure of the message as well as the words being used.

It encourages users to reduce the number of questions in an email, add a simple greeting such as ‘hello, and cut out negative words such as ‘can’t’ and ‘won’t’.

It learns to adapt to your writing style based on your feedback in the text form, offering tailored rewrite suggestions.

Designers say the service is a work in progress and further improvements are expected.
